a little bit about us

Picture
Backyard Bees is an established bee hive rental business, based in the Nelson and Tasman districts.  We have been operating for nearly 9 years from Atawhai to Motueka and all areas in-between.

We
offer fully managed rental bee hives to the home gardener, lifestyle block owner or the rural sector.

For $299.00 + gst, yearly lease, you can rent a beehive for your own backyard.  In return, you receive the benefit of bee pollination for your garden and at the end of the honey harvest season, 10 kg of beautiful honey made from the flowers and blossoms right from your own garden and the surrounding area.

areas we service

We're a family based business, located in Wakefield, Nelson.  Nick, Erin and Hamish are all experienced beekeepers and together have many years experience working in both the North and South Islands before basing themselves in Wakefield.

We work closely with the team at Tasman Honey NZ extraction services, also based in Wakefield who manage our honey extraction and packing of the honey.

We work well together as a team and have fun touring our beautiful region, while out servicing the hives.

We have hives located throughout the suburbs from Atawhai to Motueka.  Our clients come from all walks of life and have a range of gardens types and sizes, from just a relatively small town section to lifestyle blocks.

All enjoy the positive contribution bees make to their environment.

The hive itself only takes approximately half a square metre and is best sitting in a sunny corner of your garden.
We will look at your individual site to determine the best position for the hive, to suit your needs and layout of your garden.

Our vehicles

We have a purpose built sign written vehicle, that you'll see cruising around.  Both are fully enclosed, with side doors, perfect for the tighter streets and narrower driveways, which ensure that the equipment, hives and bees are secure as we travel through the residential suburbs.  Generally, we check the hives around every 3 weeks or so, a little more often spring time when there are more jobs to do to get the hive ready for summer and the honey harvest and a little less often in winter when it is too cold to open the hive.
